Irish settlers sideboard 18th century

  • This sideboard has been constantly worked by me for six months. The sideboard apparently was brought over to America by Irish settlers.  This was an important piece of furniture to them to bring it over.  The evidence is seller's story about Irish origin, handcut tongue and grove, and what appears to be european oak drawer interior.  The hardware although antique has been replaced, as there is evidence of previous keyholes. This hardware had to be replaced at the turn of the century, all pointing to 18th century origin of this beautiful piece.

This sideboard had a mirror attached to it's top and removal of it required rebuilding the top to cover dovel holes and missing wooden parts that originally held a mirror.  The interior suffered significant sag which was structurally corrected with new walnut supports.  The piece was painted in Sandbar, a paint color by Dixie Belle company, antiqued and waxed.  Top was refinished in oil based General Finishes stain and protected in polyurethane. This piece is a must see, a rare gem of a transformed furniture from Europe, most likely end of 18th century.  It was a very difficult renovation.
