  • Spinet desk circa 1930. In the18th century when the spinet instrument broke and didn’t play well anymore, woodworkers were converting them into desks. Spinet is an instrument similar to a piano. These converted desks became popular and were continued to be manufactured into the 20th century. This particular one was made by a Grand Rapids Chair Company in Michigan. Estimated date of production 1930 based on the sticker logo which was adopted in 1927. Spinet desk is a writing desk. It has three drawers, two on each side and one along the bottom. When opened it has an organizer inside, and couple of pencil rests. The inner tray pulls forward to increase the writing surface. Another interesting fact that this is walnut wood. Did you know that walnut is the only wood that becomes lighter with age? All other woods get darker. It is interesting how light this wood is. The combination of light and dark hues in it and its complete condition with no parts missing make it a beautiful and scrumptious accent.
